Mission Statement:
The United Methodist Mountain Mission in the mountains of Southeast Kentucky is a non profit project founded in 1943 by the Kentucky Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, governed by a Board of Directors appointed from Conference membership.
The Mission consists of eight Opportunity Stores through which used clothing, furniture, and odds-and-ends are sold to the community and the surrounding areas. Our goals are to:
- provide usable clothing to the needy at affordable prices
- provide local employment to the needy
- provide spiritual growth through its churches.
Operating Hours:

Saturday - 8:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M
United Methodist Opportunity Store
232 Keen Street
Burkesville, Kentucky 42717
Telephone: (270) 864-3826
The store is operated by the United Methodist Mountain Mission
The Mission includes two churches, of which one recently became a full-time appointment due to significant membership growth.
Materials sold in the Opportunity Stores are procured from contributing churches and individuals over a large area embracing Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, and portions of Ohio and Tennessee.
A central processing center receives, sorts, categorizes, prepares and stores the materials for sale through its stores. Goods are delivered to and from the Mission via its own fleet of four trucks.
Total employment of the Mission is 60 full- and part-time employees. Over the years, and particularly during recent years, the Mission has experienced significant growth. Through contributing churches, individuals and other organizations (including other church denominations) the Mission has grown into a $1,000,000 operation. God continues to use His Mission. He continues to use His people.
